CONGRATULATIONS!
Chinese Facial Acupressure
Acupressure has a history dating back thousands of years in China. By
stimulating specific points on the body, it is possible to improve the
flow of Energy (or Chi) to restore balance and harmony to body, mind,
and spirit.
In October I attended a 2-day Chinese Facial Acupressure workshop at
the International Dermal Institute in Seattle. Not only did I learn
how to apply this wonderful technique, I was also fortunate to receive
treatments as part of the practical training. I found the sessions to
be profoundly relaxing and noticed a renewed sense of well-being that
lasted for days. Chinese Facial Acupressure can be added to any Facial
Treatment or Therapeutic Massage, or it can be done as a stand-alone
treatment.
Chinese Facial Acupressure not only promotes deep relaxation, numerous
other benefits can be expected:
- Increases micro-circulation in the blood capillaries
- Improves muscle tone, color, and firmness of the skin
- Stimulates the brain to produce endorphins, the body’s
natural pain killers
- Stimulates the immune system
- Also helps relieve headaches and sinus pain
All skin types can benefit from regular Facial Acupressure treatments
and it can be helpful in the treatment of:
- Acne
- Sensitive and Sensitized Skin
- Aging skin, loose, poorly toned skin
- Sluggish skin and sallow complexion
- Post-operative healing
20 Minute Session $30.
30 Minute Session includes hand, foot, or scalp massage $45.
(included as an option in the 90 minute European Facial Treatment)
Lymph Drainage Therapy
Lymph
Drainage Therapy (LDT) uses very light, gentle, and rhythmic
wave-like movements of the hands to aid the body’s ability to drain
excess fluids, detoxify, regenerate tissue and maintain a healthy
immune system.
After Thanksgiving I attended a 4 day workshop in Vancouver, BC and it
was an exciting opportunity to further my skills and proficiency in
working with this remarkable fluid system of the body.
Many of you have already experienced LDT as part of your European
Facial, or for the specific treatment of Acne, Rosacea, Scar and Tissue
Repair after surgery, sinus pain, or to boost the immune system during
cold and flu season.
But did you know I also offer a full body LDT treatment? Include it as
a part of your Wellness program to promote optimum health.
The following results have been demonstrated in clinical studies:
- Improved immune system function
- Reduction in edemas (swelling)
- Detoxification of the body
- Regeneration of tissue, including burns, wounds and
wrinkles
- Relief of numerous chronic and subacute inflammations,
including sinusitis, bronchitis and otitis
- Relief of chronic pain
- Reduction in the symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and
Fibromyalgia
- Antispastic actions to relieve conditions such as muscle
hypertonus and some forms of constipation
- Deep relaxation to aid insomnia, stress, loss of vitality
and loss of memory
- Assists in the alleviation of skin conditions such as
eczema, psoriasis, acne, and Rosacea.
One Hour full body LDT $75.
I am offering an introductory One
Hour full body LDT session for only $50. This is an internet offer
only. Please call for an appointment and mention this special offer.

DRY BRUSHING for health
If you’ve never tried DRY BRUSHING here is some information to get you
started.
Dry Brushing is a daily technique, done at home, that stimulates the
flow of lymph, resulting in improved immune system function, general
detoxification of the body, and a reduction in edemas (as well as the
other benefits listed above under LYMPH DRAINAGE THERAPY).
It also gently exfoliates dead skin cells, leaving skin soft and
smooth! Whether or not you choose to receive professional Therapeutic
LDT treatments, dry brushing is an easy way to promote good health
throughout the year. It takes only a few minutes and can be done once
or twice a day.
Use a soft, natural bristle dry brush on dry skin. Begin at your left
foot and softly brush in circles to cover the entire bottom and top of
the foot. You do not need to use pressure or “scrub”. In fact it is
the light, soft contact with the skin that directly stimulates the
superficial lymphatic system located just beneath the skin. Move up to
your left ankle and using soft, sweeping one-way strokes, begin to
brush up the leg. All lymph pathways eventually lead to the heart so
your brush strokes will follow the direction of lymph…upwards toward
the heart. Repeat this sequence on your right foot and leg. Move to
your left hand and do circular strokes to the back and palm of the
hand, then one-way sweeping strokes up the arm toward the armpit.
Repeat on the right hand and arm. In general, the strokes on the torso
go from the midline of the body toward the armpits.
When you complete your dry brushing, shower or bathe (this cleanses
away toxins eliminated through the skin), and apply a hydrating
moisturizer while skin is still slightly damp.
I recommend that you drink plenty of water throughout the day,
particularly if you are dry brushing (to help flush toxins). How much
water? Half your body weight in ounces. So if you weigh 150 pounds,
drink 75 ounces of pure water daily (approximately 9 – 10 eight-ounce
glasses.
This is a simplified description to get you started. If you would like
more detailed information, a diagram of the lymph pathways, and a
demonstration, please call for an appointment. There is no charge for
this service if you are a Mirabella client.
Natural Bristle brushes are available at Mirabella for $6.
WINTERIZE YOUR SKIN
‘Tis the season for dry, rough, winter skin brought on by cold weather,
indoor heating systems, stress, and those dietary indiscretions we love
to indulge in during the holidays. Any one of those influences can
cause changes in the skin but add them up and the result is a winter
skin emergency! These tips should help:
Drink plenty of water and limit caffeine and alcohol which
are known dehydrators.
Always wash with warm water (never hot).
Avoid soaps and alcohol-based astringents that can be very drying to
your skin.
Gently exfoliate the skin to shed dead skin cells for smoother, softer
skin.
Use a hydrating masque or antioxidant multivitamin masque two to three
times a week.
Apply a moisturizer within 3 minutes of washing to lock in moisture and
provide a barrier against harsh environments.
Remember to apply sun screen throughout the year wherever skin is
exposed to daylight.
Relax! Stress during late fall and winter may actually increase the
number of breakouts, especially on the chest and back areas.
Schedule a Facial Treatment to help restore critical hydration and
bring skin back into balance.
Schedule a Therapeutic Massage or Hot Stone Massage to help relieve
stress and promote deep relaxation.
Try Dermalogica’s Spa Body Products and keep your skin silky smooth
this winter: Samples are available at Mirabella.

repair.
SENSITIVE SKIN or
SENSITIZED SKIN?
Do you suspect you might have Sensitive Skin? Does it seem to react to
everything? Does your skin burn, sting, itch, or become inflamed when
you apply cosmetics or skin care products? Do you flush, or turn red
easily? Perhaps you burn in moderate sunlight? Do you have thinner,
fairer skin, Northern European ancestry? Is there a family history of
hay fever, asthma, or eczema?
If you answered yes to these questions you probably have Sensitive Skin
which is an actual inherited skin type.
Then again you may have environmentally Sensitized Skin – not a type
but a condition brought on by environmental triggers. Sensitized Skin
is in fact the most rapidly growing concern among those seeking advice
from a Skin Care Therapist, It can affect any age or race, and any skin
type, from dry skin to acne. Our skin, quite literally, is under
attack from environmental pollutants and chemicals in the atmosphere,
from irritants found in many cosmetics and skin products, from harsh
scrubs, and from improper cleansing habits at home. With continued
assault the skin’s natural defense barrier (comprised of lipids and
natural moisturizers) begins to break down and skin becomes more
permeable to potential irritants.
Whether sensitive or sensitized, treatment is very much the same. And
in either case the “less is more” principle applies. It is essential
that proper, gentle home care be established. Avoiding certain
irritants and triggers, and habits that damage the skin is critical.
Cosmetic ingredients such as fragrances, D&C color, preservatives,
S.D. alcohol, and formaldehyde cause irritation and are often
potentially harmful to the skin.
Harsh scrubs and over-exfoliating can weaken the skin’s barrier
function. And for men, incorrect shaving can do the same. Be wary of
home dermabrasion kits and nut shell or apricot kernel scrubs; they
have the potential to irritate and damage your facial skin. Enzyme
microfoliants are much gentler, removing dead surface cells while
keeping the barrier in tact.
Hot water and soap are damaging to the skin’s barrier function.
Instead use lukewarm water and a pH balanced, ultra calming cleanser,
with a soft facial chamois to cleanse your skin.
Certain foods can stimulate blood flow, causing the skin to flush or
become red. These include alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods, and
sometimes dairy.
Hormonal changes such a puberty, pregnancy, and menopause may also
trigger sensitivity.
Long periods of stress can disrupt the immune system, impairing the
immune function of the skin.
Outdoor and indoor environmental pollution, including household
chemicals, can cause a free radical cascade. Antioxidant Vitamin E is
naturally found in the skin’s membranes but it is often unable to keep
up with continuous exposure.
So what is a person to do??!!
Always moisturize! Moisturizers help lock in critical
hydration and protect your skin from the environment. Adjust your
moisturizer to changing weather and climatic conditions. During winter
a more emollient moisturizer may be needed. If your skin is sensitized
you may need to use products formulated to rebuild the health of the
skin, or provide an artificial barrier when the skin’s own barrier is
compromised.
Throughout the year, every day, use chemical free sun screens that
block UVA and UVB rays.
Avoid triggers that cause your skin to redden or flush. Stay away from
hot tubs, saunas, and tanning beds.
Consult with a Skin Care professional to help identify the issues,
treat your concerns, and provide education to help you improve your
skin’s health.
Use high quality professional skin care products prescribed for the
unique needs and conditions of YOUR skin.
Regular Facial Treatments also help to repair and heal damaged skin.
During your treatment a highly active, deeply penetrating serum
concentrate reduces redness and inflammation and helps prevent
subsequent irritation. When combined with painless galvanic current
the benefit is even longer lasting and redness is reduced even more.
(Electrotherapies

Drainage Therapy detoxifies and purifies the skin, improving the
overall health of the
